Sorry my kid can’t come to virtual school because DNS is jacked

One of the things with the virtual classrooms about to start in Nashville is we’re all going to have to be connected and we’re all going to be dealing with whatever garbage our ISP decides to throw at us.

TL;DR – bitching about how bad and unreliable the internet is…

The internet, at the best of times is pretty good at getting Netflix to you. For me this morning it was a day of trying to work around the stupid AT&T hardcoded DNS servers and set up a WiFi AP that would use ones that would respond. This is currently needed for my wife to work remotely and all my IoT devices to function.

I mean, AT&T’s hardcoded ones usually work, but they have gone down three times that I’ve noticed in the past two weeks.

And it’s not just AT&T’s issue, if it rains we have a neighborhood next to us that will be posting “Comcast down for anyone else?” and when it’s hot DSL (still some people,) and cable fails. So we’re entering into this virtual only learning environment in August with the internet we’ve got, and a synchronous time that you have to have your kid in front of a laptop.

Yeah… the dog ate my homework is going to be replaced by “Comcast couldn’t get out for 7 days and what did I miss?”

This is on the back end of a survey that went out asking if our kids had access to the internet. Why yes, they do. What they don’t have access to is access to a computer when I’m telecommuting to work, which is the same time as their synchronous learning.

Hoo boy is this going to be fun.
