Potty training round 2

We didn’t really press our youngest to potty train. We learned with the oldest that when they’re ready, they’ll mention it.

About a month ago Aerin discovered that the object was not to sit on the potty, it was to pee on the potty. Honestly I think she thought we were joking as she would laugh every time. She’d sit there doing nothing, pull up her pullup, and then lay waste to a clean diaper within minutes of getting off of the pot.

But a few weeks ago she started realizing it was time to go and she did. Monday started underwear. She was so excited.

She came home with a clean pull up under her underwear and we did not know what was up with that. A little later she decided to blow the pull up out, we took it off, swapped her back to undies, and the night was fine.

Next day I talked to her teachers and the pull up had just gone on during naptime… ok, good job kiddo. Tuesday went perfect. Wednesday went mostly perfect as there was a timing accident which who cares. Thursday was a perfect daycare day, and then last night we had the craptastrophy.

She came in crying that she needed changed. Her undies looked like she was trying to smuggle a teddy bear in and I got her into the bathroom as I had planned to dump the dump in the toilet. It fell out of her underwear with a thud.

We both looked horrified.

The poo was the size of a soda can. The child is maybe 35 pounds. This was a significant weight loss and it was on the bathroom floor now. Grabbing some toilet paper while my 3yo sobbed hysterically about soiling the underwear I tried my best to say not to worry about it while also being quite amazed that much poop had 1) come out of this child, 2) held completely intact through a drop to the floor.

I dropped it in the toilet and got hit in the face with some toilet water. This thing was heavier than it looked and a 4 inch drop made a foot high spout. Lawd.

Baby wipes, soap, burning the fields and salting them all happened shortly thereafter. Kiddo was put in a pull up for the night and made to understand that was happening because it was almost bedtime and not as some sort of punishment (she was really heartbroken on this whole incident).

Today she looked at me as we were going over the litany of “if you have to go potty, stop and go right away.” She said “I no poop in mah underwear day daddy. I know.”
