Hyland’s Teething Tablets review

Hyland's Teething TabletsHyland’s Teething Tablets are homeopathic tablets that you can give your baby that allegedly relive teething pain. They’re marketed at the parents of constantly in pain screaming infants, so I had my suspicions when I first heard of them, but they’d been sworn as working by one of ITMama’s co-workers.

They have very few ingredients, those being calcarea phosphorica, chamomilla, coffea cruda, belladonna alkaloids, in a base of acadia gum, lactose n.f.

So what do those do?

Ingredient Breakdown

Calcarea phosphorica

According to this, Calcarea Phosphorica is lime and phosphates… so… Sprite and a muscle relaxer?

A mixture of the basic and several complex calcium phosphates – produced by adding dilute phosphoric acid to lime water.

Chamomilla

It’s chamomile. Sleepy time tea. If it works on the parents it’s probably going to work on the baby.

Coffea Cruda

According to wisegeek, it’s an unroasted coffee bean. Caffeine to constrict blood vessels and help with headaches?

Belladonna Alkaloids

According to the Mayo Clinic it’s used primarily for spasms and ulcers, which when you think about the teething sores are pretty much that. Too much and it’s death. I’m not sure how much more is death, but based on reading it looks like it might take about 14 bottles before dangerous levels, but I’m not a pharmacist.

Acadia Gum

Pretty much inert ingredient to make the delivery it looks like… also known as gum Arabic

Lactose N.F.

Milk prepared in accordance with the National Foundation according to this

That’s all well and good but how does it work?

As far as I can tell the tablets serve to knock baby the hell out. I can’t tell whether it relieves pain, but man it knocks baby M right the hell out.

Its the only thing I’ve ever given Maggie medicinewise that she loves. She considers it candy. Keeping it in her mouth is next to impossible as she eats it right away.

I put a few in a bottle of hers and she loved it, then passed the eff out.

Combined with baby painkillers, it doesn’t hurt. But I can’t actually see much of an improvement other than that baby passes the eff out.

So, ease of use: 5. Baby loves it.
Works?: 2. Can’t see much other that baby gets sleepy
Value: Seems a bit pricey for an item that looks to cost $1 to make about a half gallon of the things

Availability

Hyland’s Teething Tablets are available for $6.79 from Amazon. They’re slightly less there than I found them in-store, but you can find them at Target and Walmart
