Gripe Water: go ahead and stock up on this

Mommy's Bliss Gripe WaterGripe water calms the storm

Gripe water is sodium bicarbonate, fennel, and ginger. It’s also 6 uninterrupted hours of sleep. You could probably make this yourself for less than a buck, but if it doesn’t work you’re going to be at the brunt end of the no-sleep stick of your partner.

Ginger soothes the stomach, sodium bicarbonate is tums, fennel does some hippy shit you’re not going to complain about.

Gripe water usage

I couldn’t get staff editor Maggie to down Gripe Water from the dropper, she didn’t seem to hate it, but she didn’t seem to recognize that it was something you swallowed. A couple more attempts ran Gripe Water down her onesie and the attempt was aborted to give it to her in a dropper. I decided to put the gripe water in a bottle of milk and feed it to her.

Unexpected results

It was as though Satan had possessed my little one’s innards as burps, farts, and everything in between escaped with a velocity heretofore unheard of. The wails of the damned escaped her lips and I considered calling an exorcist.

About 10 minutes of this went on and then nothing. She had some gas a little later in the night, looked at me like “dad, I need a burps,” and I obliged.

And now we sleep

Maggie is two weeks old. This is the first night she slept through. It was actually a pretty creepy as we would keep getting up just to make sure she was still alive. But she was, and she was fine, and she woke up today and was a happy baby until she realized her diaper was loaded.

I also think she had a couple of stints of being woken up to be fed in the night, but that was our choice not hers.

Precaution to consider

Dose your baby sometime in the day when you have a couple of hours of brain left. While side effects are extremely rare based on the ingredients, every child is different and may suddenly decide to show an allergy or disgust at the fennell flavoring.

You’ll need to brain a bit to figure this one out, and as such dosing at 11pm and getting a 2am monster may not be useful for anyone involved.

It also might not work at all.

You can pick up Mommy’s Bliss Gripe Water from Amazon for $15.11 for two 4-oz bottles. However, you can also go to Wal-Mart or Target and pick it up for a little bit more as well. If you’re reading this I am assuming you are sleep deprived and want to try anything. Go to Wal-Mart. Re-order via Amazon. You don’t want to wait even a day on shipping 😉

I’ll try and get a recipe for some home made versions of this as you should be able to make it by the gallon for less than a buck, but baby companies gotta buy shelf space.
